ALUMINUM WELDING, FABRICATION AND REPAIR IN GREENSBORO NC
On today’s vehicles, the most common type of radiators, A/C Condensers and Heaters are manufactured from aluminum. In the past, they were typically copper and/or copper brass construction.
Why aluminum radiators, A/C Condensers and heater? Aluminum is the preferred allow because it is light weight and is far better at dissipating heat. That means it’s more efficient.
For that reason, radiators, heaters and condensers can be made smaller (and lighter weight) while still performing the cooling you need.
Understand that just because they are referred to ‘aluminum’, the component may not be completely aluminum. As an example, a typical car radiator may be constructed with an aluminum core and black plastic (or nylon) tanks, as illustrated.
Other radiator applications – typically for racing and high performance vehicles – use a totally aluminum construction. That means the radiator core and tanks are all manufactured from aluminum.

ALUMINUM RADIATOR REPAIR – ALUMINUM BRAZING
Stone holes and other ‘road hazard’ damage to aluminum radiators may be repairable. It’s a big saving to have a leaking aluminum radiator repaired as opposed to replacing it. In fact, you could end up saving hundreds of dollars.
Stone holes or punctures (as shown above) may be repaired with aluminum brazing process. To do that, it’s critically important that the radiator be cleaned from the inside. Traces of coolant or antifreeze, contaminants or other debris including grease or oil have to be removed before the process and be performed.
After cleaning the inside, the damaged area has to be cleaned from the outside to remove any oils or debris. All of this cleaning must be done before any aluminum repair can be performed.
Following the cleaning, any damaged fins have to be pulled away from the damaged tubes to provide complete access to the hole. Only then can the aluminum brazing process begin to create a repair that will be stronger than the base metal of the radiator.
